I am pretty sure I awoke to what sounded like scattered musket fire on Saturday morning. Maybe it was the ghost of Montcalm...I got out early and hung out at the local cafe. I used my biggest restaurant voice to successfully order the drink I wanted! I wrote for the next 2 hours since I'd had so little downtime working for that taskmaster, Kristen!
Irvine gas gets a gold star for having free air at a time when so many companies are charging for it or worse yet, stick a charity sticker on it to make you feel good you are paying for something that should be free! Thanks Irvine gas!
I take a tour at the museum of popular culture and start first at the old jail with Natalie. She is able to do the tour in English and I notice right off, there is something guarded about her. I learned the jail was overcrowded, dirty, and suffered from several civil rights violations. Prisoners used pails right up to the end in 1986 to go to the washroom! Natalie says this is common practice in provincial pens and she has a certain air of strength to her argument. I begin to wonder if she has in fact, been in jail. The tourist guide mentioned something about it but I thought it was a joke. She reveals later she was a tv personality who got into drugs and ended up in prison. She takes us down to the dungeons and I am shocked with what is a dirt floor with shackles here and there. It was used for many questionable activities. Crazy that stuff like that was happening in Canada. Later, I tell Natalie that everyone makes mistakes (with the exception of yours truly) and she had nothing to be ashamed about. She declined to have her photo since it might be published and due to the high readership of this blog. She has had people recognize her as her former self. She is fearful that a tv show or tabloid will try to mock her. I wished her well. I toured the other part of the museum and learned about québécois provincial politics-dupleisse. Jim and I had to do a project about him in grade 10 and sell our political party (UN) to the class. Our promo went well until Heather Beatty made a commercial that basically contradicted all the lies Jim and I had given in our campaigns. It was a pivotal moment and we never recovered in the polls. There was also a thing on crime on Quebec. Sad but true. A morbid morning and I headed out into the overcast sky. I knew I was going to get wet but when? Further to that, I was fearful that the ice cream place was going to be closed in levis! Would it have closed down and negated the reason for the 4000 km bike trip? I made it out of Trois Rivieres and onto the Chemin de Roy as told by Steve, warm showers host in St.Roch. It was the old highway between Montreal and Quebec. I mean old 1700's! The towns were all founded 400 years ago! Champlain seemed to be an old one-1664. Crazy. Then, it started to mist and progress to light rain but I had had enough. I found a closed tourist shop with water, benches, and a huge awning and it overlooked the st.lawrence and seemed very private. I called it quits. Great play as it poured about 30 mins later. Merci taxpayers of Quebec!
