I was greeted to a spectacular sunrise over the St. Lawrence that people pay good money for in the cities. The route was filled with ancient house after house and massive church after church in every small town along the Chemin de Roy. Dedicated bike lanes in most cases plus a tailwind made this a great day. I took in a seigneurs house the day before and saw much of the same thing as I progressed.I was very nearly in the Quebec city when I got caught up in st.cap rouge. I think Cartier tried to land people there in 1541 but the natives didn't want any squatters so they attacked them mercilessly. Nobody likes a freeloader! A gentlemen helped me out in French first then asked if I would prefer English and when I replied in the affirmative, he switched to flawless English.
Getting to Quebec city is almost as comfortable as arriving in Scarborough for me. I've been there so often that I know my way around well. I checked out my former school, went to the local provigo grocery store and then had a lunch of chicken wrap, Brie cheese, and Blanche de Chambly on the Plaines of Abraham not far from the spot where Wolfe received his fatal wound. The sun was shining and the leaves were turning across the St.Lawrence on the Levis side. It was really a great moment of the trip. This city holds a special place in my heart but ice cream holds an even specialer place in my stomach so I headed to the ferry to meet the ice cream cone with my name on it! As I passed through the city, I noticed the house where Montcalm spent his last few hours before passing away from his wound. Less tourists around too. I got aboard the ferry and an old guy played on the accordion. He played "Amazing Grace" which always makes me a little sad since it reminds me of funerals. Still, he played well and I watched the mass of the chateau Laurier fade back in the distance.
It was with great trepidation that I found the Chocolate Favoris was still open! I still had 60 minutes to spare! No Chapman's ice cream for me! I got a milk chocolate covered soft cone. I don't know if it's because the chocolate is thick or because it tastes so fresh and real but that has to be the best ice cream in the world. I can't believe I stopped at one!!
I called it a night at Beaumont and I choose a local park where a 200 year old mill was next to my supper table. I could see Ile New Orleans across the St.Lawrence. Once in a while a freighter or tourist cruise ship would cruise by. Great scenery. I slept well until a late night visit by an older group but they left without harming me...always a good thing. Nights are getting dark earky and frigid! Need to wrap this up and power it out to the Ocean! I now understand why the geese seem so panicked flying south. Who wants to get caught in the snow?
