I worked with Kayoko Hachiya at Shibata Agricultural school about 15 years ago. We`ve kept in touch ever since and I was happy to hear that she was alright in the recent earthquake of 2011. We met at the TokuhuTagajo Station and proceeded to drive to a family restuarant. Her sons Naoki (10) and Hachiya Jr (13) were growing up fast. Her husband is also a teacher. We enjoyed a good dinner and then came back to their very modern house. Her brother lives across the street from her. Kayoko has an aunt and a neice who live in France so she actually speaks French as well and has visited France several times. I filled them in on my trip and they were quite amazed that I would travel by bike as well. They gave me their story on the earthquake and they were ok but Kayoko had to cancel a school trip to the States and this meant contacting each student regardless of where they were so she was on foot, bike, and car when she could get the gas. They went about 2 weeks without gas, water, or power. Rough indeed. So glad they are ok and that I got the chance to meet them. They even presented me with a gift! I look forward to meeting them again someday.
